I have an extra 60Gb HDD from my old computer for all the mac files. If I want to boot to SL, I always need to choose the HDD from BIOS

the only problem is that the HDD doesn't fit in to the computer case so I have to keep it outside and the computer case open

but the dust goes inside and could heat the system up

You need to find the right balance... before you definitively close the case don't forget to tidy it up
