I like 1024 but if you have the time fluid definitely is better.

I can create those images at 960px no problem, but to somehow make it fluid....

Not sure how to make that fluid unless you fade the edges so they blend with your background.

Or use tables for the container for your header image and set the image as the background... it will scale the edges appropriately I think.

don't ever go fluid...you'll essentially lose control over what is being seen, but what about mobile users and TV websurfers?
