trouble in apple_aradise?

sync services for a colleagues iphone...suddenly (I am sure something was messed with) throw an applemobiledevicehelper has unexpectly quit.

apparently common error on windows, less under osx...however, reinstall of itunes which apparently reinstalls sync services doesn't help.
