You will be given a 'hand' of two cards. The first round of betting starts here. If you're confident that you will win that round, call.
Feisty enough? Then raise the bet.
After all have betted, three 'community cards' will be dealt. (Keep in mind that the main objective is to make the best five-card combo.
Another round of betting begins. You can opt to check (not betting but not withdrawing), raise a bet, or fold (withdraw).
After which, another card will be dealt, the 'turn.' Another round of beting will commence.
After everyone has betted/checked (though some may have folded), the last card called the 'river' will be dealt.
The last round of betting will start.
The player with the best five-card combo using the two 'hand' cards and the cards on the table, wins.
The heirarchy of hands from lowest to highest are as follows:
High card: no pairs, just the highest card and the highest kicker card possible. Ex: A K 9 6 2 beats K 9 8 7 2.
One pair: highest pair of cards and the highest kicker possible. Ex: 7 7 K 10 8 beats 7 7 Q 10 9.
A Poker Geek, I see.
Two pair: Two pairs of cards and the highest kicker possible. Ex: 5 5 2 2 Q beats 4 4 3 3 8 (since 5 5 is higher than 4 4).
Three of a kind/trio: a trio of cards and the highest kicker possible. Ex: K K K 9 8 beats K K K 8 7 (both have three K but 9 beats

.
Straight: Five cards regardless of suit in consecutive order. Ex: 10 9 8 7 6, 8 7 6 5 4. The basis for winning is the highest number.
Flush: five cards, all of the same suit (all hearts/diamonds/clubs/spades).
Full House: a trio and a pair. The basis for winning is the one with the highest trio. If tied at the trio, then the pairs.
Ex: 8 8 8 4 4 beats 4 4 4 K K since 8 8 8 is higher than 4 4 4.
Four of a kind: fourof the same kind and the highest kicker possible. Ex: 2 2 2 2 8.
Straight Flush: five consecutive cards like the straight, but all of the same suit (as the flush). Ex: 6h 5h 4h 3h 2h.
Royal Flush: A straight flush with A as the highest. Ex: As Ks Qs Js 10s.
