plurk to update itself! Why must I click update all the time.

it's a usability issue. new plurk get mixed up easily with old plurk in a timeline UI.
alvin says
and there's really no way to separate them because there's really no way to decide which plurk has been read and which has not.

but it auto-updates replies... just not new plurks!
ryanlim says
how about highlighting the unread plurks?
alvin says
ryan: like i said, how do you decide which plurk is unread?
saltybeagle says
some indication, like how the reply count is right now
alvin says
i read plurk without even hovering or clicking on them.
saltybeagle says
unread... they're all unread. Most the time you can't read the plurk until you click on it.
alvin says
actually you dont really have to click on it. hovering it gives you the full plurk.
ryanlim says
currently if they are unread, the plurk count is highlighted in red/pink
saltybeagle says
yeah, diff color or something until you hit reload/clear, then it assumes it is read.
saltybeagle says
I'm friggin lazy, and I hate havin to click update.
alvin says
yeah but you could have still read it without doing anything and it will still be highlighted.
saltybeagle says
that's fine... at least I see it.
saltybeagle says
I don't like that the system knows there's a new plurk.. but it won't show it to me until I click update
saltybeagle says
/me sets opera to reload every 30 secs.
alvin says
to put it another way, some users do like it when they can control when a new stream of new plurks will flow in their timeline.
saltybeagle says
HAH, I beat the system
alvin says
but you do bring up an interesting point. it's all about the tradeoff.
alvin is
going to start an internal discussion about this.
saltybeagle says
well.... start putting them to the left --- up on the timeline
saltybeagle says
then make me scroll left to see them.
saltybeagle says
just remember my point on the timeline.
alvin says
you mean hide them intentionally?
saltybeagle says
no. Continue plotting the new plurks as they come in...
saltybeagle says
but keep me at the time when I last hit update... 4:39pm
saltybeagle says
does that make sense?
alvin says
so you will still have to hit update?
saltybeagle says
nono...
saltybeagle says
keep me at my last point in the timeline.
saltybeagle says
when I last hit refresh... or whereever I left it while I was draggin the timeline
alvin says
how do you know when's your last point?
alvin says
last time you refresh/visit plurk?
saltybeagle says
yah. That's how it is right now, right...?
saltybeagle says
the timeline just doesn't continue left until I hit update.
alvin says
ah i see what you mean. but like i said, you will still have old plurks that are highlighted
saltybeagle says
I like that idea. Let the plurk timeline keep on rollin' --- give me an option to auto follow it as time rolls on, or keep me in my place.
saltybeagle says
sure... keep highlighting the plurks that new comments come in on etc
alvin says
ok. here's why we dont do auto update. you have 5 new plurks coming in. we highlight them. you read them without 'touching' on the plurk
alvin says
next stream comes in and you get say 10, so now you have 15 highlighted plurk.
alvin says
to remove the highlight, you have to touch/hover over them.
alvin says
this might not seem much at first, but after 10 or 15 minutes, it feels like an arcade shooting game, just to get rid of the highlight.
alvin says
if you dont bring in highlight, then old and new plurks are the same. leaving you having to hunt them down everytime.
saltybeagle says
but you already have that problem
saltybeagle says
mark all as read
saltybeagle says
--- with the responses.
alvin says
well you cant actually read the responses unless you click on them
alvin says
so that's why we highlight it red. so there's a sure way to decide whether you have read it.
alvin
this discussion did lead me to add a simple tweak. clicking mark all as read will now bring you back to main timeline automatically.
