that assumes people will shop elsewhere and not wait for Amazon to come back on-line, which is a rather pessimistic view.

no, it assumes that's how much they lose per minute on their non-compliance with the Amazon S3 99% guarantee. S3 Hosting is key.

that estimate is based on Amazon's retail traffic (where the outage hit) not AWS :-)
