doesnt it require a special SL viewer to be installed aside to be able to operate?

I believe you only have to log in with the new viewer once; after that you can go back to the usual one.

what point if the machine you're on cannot run openGL graphics? i love the idea of a slim IM client for SL but im not sure about this

The SLim client itself doesn't need OpenGL as far as I know (and there should be no reason it does).

So once you are in, it should work anywhere. It doesn't work for me, though.

As far as I know - but I'm not sure, you may need to sync your friends list per machine rather than per account.
