I know how you feel. I wish I remember how I solved that problem (annoyed)

Are you excited for Windows 7??
Trinkit says

It'll have the same restrictions. As well, the possible solutions are limited.

Either plugging a double ended mic cord, using software emulation of some sort (unreliable), being lucky enough to have a chipset where

you can find an equivalent driver that doesn't have it disabled, or purchasing an older external soundcard

and being lucky enough to find vista drivers that don't disable it.

unfortunately, none of the solutions work in my specific case (I don't have the mic cable to try that one)
Eddie.exe says

Yeah they really screwed that up in Vista.

confused... if vista sends sounds to your speakers you should be able to record that sound... is this an internal thing you are trying to do

are you sure you just don't have the proper audio drivers or an audio card that supports system sounds?
Trinkit says
It's a combination of both. It appears my particular driver may lack the ability to record 'what you hear' at the hardware level, but
Trinkit says
impossible to know. There are drivers for other OEMs using this chipset that enable Stereo Mix, but, none of those work.
Trinkit says

In addition, Vista hides these options by default, even if supported by your hardware.
Trinkit says

er, driver == hardware about 3 plurks up ;P
Trinkit says

Solution is: 1) buy an external soundcard with hardware and drivers that support this (it's a notebook computer). 2) use headphones,
Trinkit says
a y adapter, and a double ended mic cable, 3) disable driver signing and use a piece of software called virtual audio cable.

sounds complicated... i choose a simpler way... os x
akiraokami says

that os x wouldn't solve the problem if you're trying to record game movies, as you may or may not know, os x + games does not = true

yes some games are mac compatible

also Windows 7 seems to have some nice new features, but other than that, it's -still- Vista, you can doll up Vista as much as you want,
