why Plurk has started to make a noise for me? Has it always done that for you, or is it new?

It's new. Mine doesn't seem to be doing it though.

you can turn it off, there is a sound icon where the "view all plurks" bar is.

I also noticed that there are little lock icons on the "private" plurks

Jaxblk unfortunately you have to turn it off each time you open plurk, that's annoying.
