i believe our high school teaches MLA and a neighboring school does as well...wished they taught APA so I was ready for college.
agapejen This is what I am hearing from students and wonder how to make the change...or do both as options...thinking...hmmm
mla is definitely easier, and for the non-college-prep classes not too bad, but for those going to college - apa is a must
MLA, because it follows capitalization conventions that are too hard to teach as it is!
I reserve APA for higher ed or, when required, for science projects submitted to our VJAS (Va. Jr. Academy of Science) competition
If they use online tools, like Citation Machine, it's easy to plug in the information for either APA or MLA.
I had a horrible time learning APA, it was when I got to grad school that I finally picked it up.
I think most schools wind-up teaching MLA because that is what English majors/classes use. Non-history classes use APA and history uses
I think that's why most HS don't wind up teaching APA or Chicago because most English teachers have the greatest experience w/ MLA and may
not even think to use the others as much.
I like
easybib.com -- it's truly easy for students to use, and it creates an MLA bibliography completely formatted, free. Pay extra for APA
geesh, wish they had this before...i would have paid for apa help
Yes, I agree! My daughter taught me about
easybib.com & I saw how easy it was for her to create a works cited page
Really appreciate this conversation. I will keep teaching MLA,as I know it well & begin to learn APA as teachers want.
We subscribe to Noodle Tools. It is great as it stores students works cited online. It will do either MLA or APA...recommend it.
As long as there are no annotated bibliographies...I'm a happy camper!
Well I have one teacher that insists on that
mindelei
I have only had to do it once in during my undergrad years. I can't imagine why anyone would require that in HS.
MLA in K-12 schools around here. I don't think anyone teaches APA until college in this area, but I could be wrong.
APA is so complicated and hard to learn but the online tools like easybib and citation machine sure do make it easier.
LoriB What is it that makes APA so much more complicated than MLA? I see some variances, but not necessarily things that make it difficult.
APA in higher ed and MLA in high school here
I think w/ APA it isn't so much that the bibliography is complicated, but all the rest of what & how to cite & punctuate
in the body of the work is
hence the fairly large book of rules and examples I had to buy for my graduate work.
Ha! I feel like the MLA book is my Library Bible. I study it all the time. Did a citation today for an online posting. Now that was a first.
