A correct exposure should look like a 'hump' that tails off to zero just before the right hand edge of the histogram.

If there's a long gap between the end of the hump and the right edge of the histogram, the shot's underexposed.

If the hump is clipped by the right hand edge of the histogram, it's overexposed.
