I've been hanging out on the IRC channels for the old wiki and was invited to the new one.

It's been really fascinating to watch all this unfold. Wikia have been absolute jerks throughout all of this

(albeit with a friendly "customer service" smile)

I watched one of their community reps argue over the language used in the site notice, for one.

"We don't want you to use the word 'moving'. The wiki is not moving. You're just setting up an *alternate* version."

And they won't allow links to the new site (which isn't ready yet, or I'd share).

They've also been badmouthing the new host, in spite of the fact that it regularly handles 2-3 times the traffic Wikia gets.

Moral of the story: NEVER start a wiki on Wikia.com. They will not let you leave.

So obviously we've got to get back in gear. I think we can "conveniently forget" offering a second name vote.

I don't think that would go over well.

I don't really want to take on running a wiki anymore either -- I used to spend all day, every day doing wiki stuff. Never again.

Go over well with whom?

With the existing editors?

I've thought about this before - I think that instead of "moving" the current wiki, it would be better to just start fresh.

(Not that I have plans to do this)

With a fresh start, you could make a straight-forward Girl Genius Encyclopedia, just unembellished facts.

Create separate areas for theorizing and waxing poetic.

the problem with that is that the material is so dependent on PoV by design. But anyway, it seems to be working pretty well as-is.
