I've been hanging out on the IRC channels for the old wiki and was invited to the new one.

I watched one of their community reps argue over the language used in the site notice, for one.

"We don't want you to use the word 'moving'. The wiki is not moving. You're just setting up an *alternate* version."

And they won't allow links to the new site (which isn't ready yet, or I'd share).

They've also been badmouthing the new host, in spite of the fact that it regularly handles 2-3 times the traffic Wikia gets.

Moral of the story: NEVER start a wiki on Wikia.com. They will not let you leave.

I don't really want to take on running a wiki anymore either -- I used to spend all day, every day doing wiki stuff. Never again.

I've thought about this before - I think that instead of "moving" the current wiki, it would be better to just start fresh.

With a fresh start, you could make a straight-forward Girl Genius Encyclopedia, just unembellished facts.

the problem with that is that the material is so dependent on PoV by design. But anyway, it seems to be working pretty well as-is.
