if anyone has an idea what could have caused me to get an 8% yield and another girl to get none while the rest of the class got high yeilds.

we treated meso-stilbene dibromide with strong base (KOH) in triethylene glycol at 190C, chilled it, added water, and chilled some more

I doubt that purity would have been much of an issue since the entire class did used the same thing.

My temp did fluctuate, but I got it under control and heated the solution at the required temp for the full time.

would put it down to evaporation and gas escapes. Volatile things you're using.
