It's interesting but overrated.
Cynthia
asks

overrated?
funkydung
, I have concluded that you are just a contrarian.
scottsweep

definitely not overrated. I think our generation has been so saturated w/ similar stories that's its easy to miss their roots. Brilliant!

Citizen Kane. I think it still holds up, too. It's a good story.
FunkyDung

Honestly,
Cynthia
, I really was terribly impressed.
FunkyDung
says

Oops. I mean NOT terribly impressed.
FunkyDung
says

I'm not contrary for the sake being contrarian.
FunkyDung

I really don't think it's the greatest film or anywhere close. It's a very good film, but I don't think it's anything particularly special.
Cynthia
asks
what would you consider a great film?
FunkyDung
says
Hmm...I'd be hard-pressed to name a "great" film, but there are a great many I've enjoyed more than CK.
FunkyDung
says
I don't find CK to have much replay value.
FunkyDung

I also have a hard time regarding Casablanca as a great romance.
FunkyDung
says
I enjoyed it, but more as a darkly humorous drama than as a romance.
FunkyDung
says
Similarly, I found 4 Weddings and Funeral immensely more enjoyable when I viewed it as a drama than when I believed the comedy hype.
Cynthia
says
but you can't name a single movie you consider great?
FunkyDung

Princess Bride, Brazil, Shawshank Redemption, Stalag 17...
FunkyDung

Greatness depends entirely on the metric.
FunkyDung
says
I'd be more inclined to sort movies in heaps rather than stacks or queues, and I'd have a hard time picking a single greatest.
FunkyDung

Ben Hur
FunkyDung

*That*
is a great film.
Cynthia
says
what about Ben Hur makes it a great movie for you?
Cynthia
says
I wasn't asking what is the greatest film of all time. I wanted to know if there are films that you consider great -- forgetting genre, etc.
FunkyDung
says
That might be easier to answer in person. 140 characters makes rich conversation rather difficult.
Cynthia
says
seriously, you are making this bigger than it needs to be.
Cynthia
says

I consider all the films you listed great. Haven't seen Shawshank but mean to. But I don't enjoy Ben Hur as I do the others.
FunkyDung
says
Ah. I thought this was a, "So you think you're a better film crictic, do you?" exercise.
FunkyDung
says
I couldn't tell if the contrarian label was meant playfully or critically.

Sometimes people don't like the beats my drummer plays.
