I do subscribe to the "new FF's shouldn't play like old FF's" idea. If you want that you can either replay them or play Dragon Quest.

it should be noted that Final Fantasy as a series is not a succession of sequels, rather it is merely a naming convention. While it retains

certain hallmarks to it like magic conventions and summons, each game has rarely stayed the same. The only actual sequel is X-2.

What has persisted over the series however, and what I believe Square upholds in each iteration, is the culture of innovation that made the

first so good in the first place. The point is hardly to keep the same old system; the idea is to keep adding new twists, following or not.
