Velocity Micro built my machine and they are fantastic and have really really fab customer service they aren't cheap though

dell is decent. minimal pre-installed crapware. i say go for it.

I know with Vista it has to be 64b to handle over 3gb of ram.. does XP have any issues like that? if we could wipe it for XP, I hate Vista.

xp can't handle anything over 4GB (will see it as approx 3.5 GB in the system)

you could always switch to a *nix distro if you're willing to take the time to learn a few things

i agree it's worth it in parts alone

price is good, 8G of ram is probably way overkill (unless you are doing video editing, high end graphics, etc..) as in my experience most

programs can't use anywhere close to that
