The tab will pop back open if you're closing it at the same time as a new message is trying to come through.

If there's no new message, it'll stay closed after you close the tab.

You can prevent group IMs from coming completely either from all groups or from the groups you don't receive notices from.

That's closing tabs then. It's just ironic and frustrating that the ones you want to keep closed are the ones most likely to reopen.
