I'd have thought to start dec. somewhere near the start of the toe.

I normally decrease about 2" from the top of the toe. I decrease down until I have 16 sts left in total. Hope that helps

My Husbands 1st knitting project was socks with a SR heel. But I taught him not a books - is that cheating? Good luck wiht your socks

... my wife taught me to knit, but despite knitting since she was 12, she's never knit socks, so I have to seek help!
