(LOL) I like the apocalyptic war theory.

are there any theories as to why the number of known pokemon species seems to inexplicably increase by 150 every few years?
Kilroy

Or why no one seemed to noticed that they had genders for (presumably) hundreds of years?
Kilroy

And why no one discovered the neighboring country that existed just on the other side of the mountains?
Kilroy

Although that could actually be explained by the war thing.

Maybe it sparked a dark age, and Kanto and Johto are semi isolated remnants of a larger nation who are only now rediscovering one another.
Kilroy

That would explain the similarities in culture and language.

A large war could also explain why no one seems to know that much about pokemon, although that's a little bit of a stretch.
Kilroy

Maybe that information was just lost.

Considering some of the scarily advanced technology they have, I'm for the war theory.
Kilroy

Maybe the new types of pokemon are just migrating from areas of where isolated fighting continues.
Kilroy

I don't know, maybe their society was much, much more advanced before the war happened.
Kilroy

It's also possible that the war didn't really effect their part of the world.

Maybe they were a colony that was simply cut off when their parent nation went dark, and they never bothered to reestablish communications.
Kilroy

Maybe they didn't want to get dragged into the fighting, so they intentionally isolated themselves.
Kilroy

That would explain the Johto/Kanto thing, too. Maybe they're just now starting to explore around to see who else survived.
Kilroy
Maybe they just didn't know Johto was still there.
Kilroy

Well yeah, but it's still fun to overthink the shit out of it. (LOL)

I once read a theory about how Cars took place in a dystopian alternate version of the 90s, where people created sentient automobiles...

...which turned on and ultimately destroyed their masters.

I mean, how do they reproduce? They have no obvious means of sexual reproduction, and they don't have the dexterity to build eachother.

Clealy they were built by a now absent third party.
