is really enjoying L4D 1&2 now just need to find some competent team mates and sort out my voice chat thing cos steam doesn't allow ...
for 2 sound cards with one running voice and the other audio
back in my clan/squad days i was running my main rig for gaming and a second one for teamspeak.
did some soldering so the game sound plus the voice would come over the headset and the mike went to the voice rig...
it works OK on my system with multiple sound cards, on win7
set default sound output in win7 to the voice one, set it in l4d to the sound effects one
I have used one sound device for the mic, a diff one for voice output, and yet another for game sounds
