Even if the dictionaries are starting to give in, I refuse to accept 'octopi' as a word mainly because--I'm not making this up--there's

a really satisfying climactic scene in the Orson Scott Card horror novel 'Lost Boys' which hinges on it being an incorrect pluralization.

I'm with you (for different reasons!). 'Octopi' is just /wrong/. The root word is Greek, not Latin!

The Chambers Dictionary 11th edition also states: "octopi is wrong"

and the plural of moose should be meese, obviously.

either that or just dispense with the arcane spellings and pluralize things just like the rest of the freaking english language.
