if there is a VOIP app for iPhones - why should I have to use my stupid desk phone, all it is doing is connecting to the interwebs anyway...

I should be clear - I don't want to make VOIP calls everywhere, I know there are apps for that.
I specifically want my iPhone to replace my desk IP phone...
VOIP phones are always-on devices attached to a specially tuned network. A roaming phone that disappears randomly breaks that usage-model.
you dont get voicemail if there's no device to handle it. No connection = disconnected number.
can't the desk unit handle that? the app could link into the unit to pull off VM...
actually, the VM isn't stored on the unit that sits on my desk - I have to call an extension to get my VM.
it's all sitting in a server somewhere
I can call forward from my VoIP work phone to the iPhone - works smoothly though not exactly voip
