artreyu: i don't have another hdd that is big enough at the moment. anyway, too bad the historical backups are gone, but that's fine.

notageek: raid1 wouldn't have helped. this is a filesystem corruption.

But everything works just fine when I'm nosing around my old files. But if I need to recover them.. well my computer seems to think that's

out of the question.

notageek: my mac had some power management issue that caused the USB ports to power off at random, hence the filesystem corruption.

I reset the PMU and SMC and it seems to work fine now.
