could you have him refer to individual weapons by type without using the word for the category?

"Where's your thing you fight with?" And have him list his weapons instead of referring to them as a group.

I'll assume somebody helped him out explaining shit with a synonym or with specifics, and now I already worked around it by calling them a

'partner' which actually works very well with his personality too, as it denotes more equality than ownership.
