and i have calluses in really, really strange places
I chew and pick at the skin around my finger nails. It's some sort of skin condition.
oh, i do that too, but for some reason that doesn't form calluses
and i don't think i have a skin condition, just a... neurosis? foible?
No, it actually is a skin condition! I forget the name of it though.
It's more about the compulsion to do it though.
oh, i believe you, i meant i do it but out of habit
not because i have a condition
sdfghjk I think we're just misunderstanding each other.
I don't mean there's something wrong with your skin that makes you do it or anything/
Let me see if I can find the page about it. It can explain it better than I can. xF
the picking at nails/cuticles thing, not the chewing hands thing
i was going to express confusion as to why i seem to only have chewing calluses on my left hand, but then i remembered i'm right-handed
I was super surprised there was a name for it. xD
though thankfully i don't bite to the point of blood/discoloration
especially the thing about calluses forming
It can be really gross sometimes, yeah.
But it's kind of like, when you're doing it, you don't really realize it?
welp. At least i dont' eat my hair XD
since that can actually be dangerous >_>
Although I do really dislike handing people things because then they have to see my fingers.
but now the next time my mom tells me to stop biting my nails, i can tell her i have dermatophagia
My mom tells me that all the time too.
I'm like "They're my fingers I'll do what I want."
i just sort of go 'yes mom' and stop until she forgets about it
or until i'm not paying attention again i guess >_>
I know she's only trying to help but.
It's like her telling me to stop makes me want to do it more.
xD It's so weird, I know.
....lmao, i remember there was a speech class in college
and, perhaps because i was in it, one of the girls decided to do a speech about the grossness/dangers of nailbiting
i was absentmindedly nibbling on my thumb when the words reached my brain, lmao
i'm amused now, it was so damn embarrassing that day
I remember my freshman year of high school I was so stressed I literally picked the nail completely off my left pointer finger.
And everyone kept asking me what I did to it.
...maybe i should put a TMI thinger on this plurk
in case hand chewing didnt' scare people off already
... I just realized what it must say about me that I was interested in it.
well, poeple are interested in things they have in common with others
even if that's dermatophagia
and you educated me! so this is a good thing
I think it's because there are certain things people don't like to talk about.
So when you find someone who has the same thing who's willing to talk about it, it's kind of nice.
It's like "Oh good, I'm not the only weirdo who picks at their skin."
i've always been like this, so i guess i didn't see anything weird about it idk
Literally, for as long as I can remember.
though i guess i don't see too many other people shoving the side of their pointer finger into their mouths
I still remember my mom asking my doctor how to get me to stop.
i started with nailbiting, lol, my parents tried a lot of stuff before they gave up
I know right? I'll be on the bus just nibbling away like nothings wronf.
idk if the bus is a good example, i see lots of people doing weird things on there
Probably why I don't feel weird doing it. xD
My mom used to paint my nails. So I'd chip the paint off instead of bite my nails.
Except then I'd chip the paint off and bite the nail before she could repaint it.
actually i like painting my nails, and i like to keep it as long as i can...
though yes, it's fun to chip off the paint once it starts to go
...it's not helped when i nibble at the sides of my fingers XD
i think my mom tried some of that bitter liquid stuff once?
i think i didn't like it, but it didn't stop me >_>
I don't mind bitter stuff at all.
She tried... I think it was something that was spicy?
i think i just got really good at not doing it when they coudl see me XD
Yeah.xD After a while I learned better.
I would stop for about a year and then start back worse too.
/checking out other links/ while we're being gross here, i think i do the skin-picking thing too
but only when i have like, pimples
i'm not covered in sores like that poor guy
The only thing I've ever picked at is scabs which. Isn't much better.
oh, well. That's sort of what i meant?
like. Pimples hurt. so i pop them
But mine normally don't form a scab.
i wouldn't pick at them if they didn't scab up >.<
they heal so slowly because i keep on, well, picking at them
I do that whenever I get a scab.
I just pick and pick and pick.
....at least i like scars, though i'm not sure if i genuinely like them or if that's just something i've decided
I don't mind them but I pretty much had no choice.
