same here!! I didn't even know who the Sandman was until I read it in a kid's book last year

i didn't know who sandman was until i rewatched an episode of courage the cowardly dog with him in it

maybe he's just not part of American fairytale culture? European maybe?

(I wonder why I knew what sandman was. I think my parents used him somewhat in my folklore so I was aware of his existence, just not magic)
