or was that just Edo because didn't they start calling the Meiji period Meiji pretty quickly?

I know I'm like super-late to this, but DURING the time period, the name was always different.

Emperors were never given their "Reign Names" until after they died.

So it was always "The 10th year of the current era."

Now, reflecting on a previous timeframe, you'd be able to know the name for it.
