I sort of see how people think of young babies as something like a pet: you love them but they can't really love you back in the way you want - which led me to thinking about dogs, who love unconditionally
the difference really is that you want to coax the baby to communicate with you, and that that line of thinking is eventually, barring circumstances, rewarded - that's something pet owners can only fantasize
however, in the early going, it's going to be limited to plaintive cries whenever discomfort arises - the smiling isn't there yet, for example, the reinforcement of feedback hasn't been developed
when the baby starts to see, and remember, it'll help in these things. in other news, elf_chan and I think we heard Mat laugh a bit, but, like his smiling, we haven't had repeats yet
I did have elf_chan's iPhone trained on them at that moment, but it was on still camera mode, and I only caught her reaction to it. To be fair, my reaction was the same, hence blurry image.
