remember, this was in an earlier age where Joe probably had the education of a 7th grader

so honestly, he probably only had the education and maturity of a 7 year old, not being able to look past superficial appearances and initial impressions

but Joe is able to do that

because he's a kind person...imagine being raised by Mrs. Joe...you're probably not going to turn out to be a "wonderful" person if she was your sister and surrogate mother

so it's not his fault...in fact, he's the victim, so you should feel sorry for his being ignorant due to his upbringing

yes...i do feel sorry for him, but there's a point where a book character is so pathetic (not inadequate pathetic but arousing pity pathetic) that you start feeling a bit annoyed
