So Ive been searching for names for different tones of black skin, I was liking from light to dark: Caramel, Chocolate & Coffee, but then I discover that some might find this offensive....is it? Because
I also found some find being called "Black" offensive, and others who find it offensive that people dance around the word and would rather they did use that term. Its never occurred to me
All the schools I attended were mixed, I never saw racism growing up except from a very few ignorant adults, no-one of my age
what do you call your other tones?
like, are they also named after food
Fair, Pale, Medium, Sunkiss, Suntan, Deeptan and Dark
like, Milky, Creamy, Peach, etc
then caramel, chocolate, coffee makes perfect sense to me
but if it's like Fair, Tan, Sunkissed, then Chocolate
ah no, these will be new tones different from that series, separate
i like it, food is delicious
thats what i used, no one ever yelled at me for it so lol
as a black person I don't find those names offensive so ROCK ON
I think one of the reasons they're found to offensive are not only because they are food names, but also names of food that have historically featured heavily as products of slave labor and colonization.
Maybe ask some black bloggers?
woah, Id never made that connection, the persons offense in this case was that the shades of caramel, chocolate and coffee vary depending on how much milk they had in them! But she was super mad about it.
do you personally find them offensive Chandra?
I don't think I know for sure who might be black in RL...I guess just ask openly like this
Lourdes Denimore is I think
Gidge: i was about to ask rofl, not as easy as it looks!
I'm as white as you can get so take my opinion with a pinch of salt, but I imagine the food related names would be better than the color ones, "soot", "black", "ash" "dark brown" would probably way more risky
NenaJanus: Just because one person used a name for a tone doesn't mean others shouldn't, shit I WISH more used the same names, that way when I wanna see EVERYTHING I have in TAN or MOCHA.... I get all the skin
I would use the same convention that you use for the other skin tones like maybe sepia, umber, bistre
