As a former phone monkey, I can confirm that, yes, the quality of my service quickly degraded when the customer was an asshat.
yup. And anyone with any level of customer service experience can simultaneously do the right thing and try to help you and make it miserable for you.
My favorite was, "I need to look up your account details, please hold." and sticking them on hold for 10 minutes to cool off.
I hate poorly behaved people. Though I usually get horrible customer service because I'm a girl.
