His hypermetabolism was aging him as soon as he learned to run, and he was basically being used for study. They hooked his brain up to virtual reality to get his mind up to speed with the rest of him

But he already looked like a teenager at 3 and his grandma realized he'd probably die an old man before he reached 10

So she broke him out of the lab and took him to the past to be trained by the Flash to get his power under control.

I want to read that now, but I already have half a million fandoms to keep up with.

Regardless, Bart now makes so much more sense.
