The people, the shops, the whole thing looks scripted. Like it's some imaginary, idealistic view of what a college town should be.

a very specific type of embittered Berkley grad ended up at HSU and Arcata, though (LOTS of them): intellectually pompous oddballs who refused to acknowledge intelligence in anyone but themselves.

you try not to generalize . . . but I met so many Berkley people who were all like that, it made me wonder about the place.
