I wonder if the militant feminists who get angry when a door is held open for them would suddenly change their tune in an emergency situation that calls for women and children to be saved first.

I would totally remind a bitch of it in that situation, too.

I think if people want to open doors for other people it's a perfectly nice thing. I don't know why people clutch their pearls at stuff like that.. IMO it's just dumb. Polite is polite.

I will never ever ever understand why some women get all angryface for a guy holding the door open for them.

I open doors for people all the time.

Ruby

right? it's not like a man does it because he thinks she's actually incapable of opening a door lol

Right. Chivalry doesn't equal Chauvinism

if anything I think gestures like that show respect for women and wanting to treat them like something special

"I respect you and I value you and I want to treat you with extra kindness and make your life easier so I'm going to open this door, pull out this chair, pay for this dinner, and drop my coat in a puddle."

lol I've opened doors for guys before.. usually cause I've gotten to the door first and it's just a nice thing to do. What are you supposed to do - slam it in someones face?
Ruby

yeah I hold it open for anyone, but I can't say that I mind when I hold it open for a man and he grabs it instead and holds it for me
Ruby

I think that's really nice

personally the reason i do it is because i think it makes me a better person
Petrie

i'd rather be the kind of guy who holds a door open for a woman (or a child or an older person) then the kind of asshole who'd just let it slam....
Petrie

it's not about some deeper sociopolitical statement or show of superiority... it's just spending an extra five seconds to be a 'nice guy'
Lauryn

Yeah I have a friend from school who's a feminist and she got upset the other day cause she was going out with a guy and he defended her when his friends were being idiots with her
Lauryn
and then she came where I was going on about how he didn't think she could defend herself and that was demeaning to her as a woman. I was like "I think what he did was nice"
Lauryn

I would be more pissed if the guy just stood there and did nothing if his friends are being assholes
Ruby

'chivalry' is supposed to be more about holding oneself up to a higher standard then just 'what's in it for me?'
Petrie
granted, there have been plenty of assholes through the years who have hidden behind that label while being, well, assholes... but the same is true of science and religion... doesn't invalidate the concept
Lauryn

Yeah I think it's common courtesy and good manners in the end, it's not some sort of expression of superiority or whatever BS they interpret out of it.
