i'm holo i actually haven't finished rf4 yet because of a depressive bout and i'm massively ashamed of that

but i'm a complete nerdball about rf lore and i've played large portions of most of the games
well, there wasn't much different except that the writing was less shit than RF1's

rf1 and 2 felt fucking wooden because npcs did so little
could be that too
RF1 literally was a HM spinoff and it showed
a slightly more sophisticated npc interaction system does wonders for games like rf
i will maintain forever that the reason rf3 felt so much better and livelier was that the npcs didn't run on rails anymore and there was a bunch of immersion stuff to make them more organic
On the flipside, it gets a lot of complaints about being an unending train of literal crazy
the writing quality wasn't much better (though the english va and translation definitely was) but the game mechanics just made it so much less like feeding numbers to faces

and the characters are batshit because....idk there's something in the water in sharance
i still love most of 'em

she has a few issues that you can kind of extrapolate but they definitely have to be extrapolated

Mist in RF1 was horrid, Mana was...... okay but really worked fine alone (this may be because Kyle was also boring as silt), and Shara... just doesn't quite measure up to Sharance's usual strangeness

Since Gen 2 is where literally all of the crafting (which is to say, 90% of the RUNE FACTORY EXPERIENCE) is locked
my roommate last year was a japanese girl from cali and she'd never played any of the rf games in english but was a reasonably big fan of them in japanese
and she was so amused by my hatred of rf2
I mean I like a few things about RF2 - largely how the first generation (especially Barret) seems to visibly go through emotional maturation - but locking the crafting behind the generation gap is
until i pulled out the cart and played a little and she just got this horrified look on her face when jake opened his mouth

and agreed with me that it was an abomination
and yes, the English version is a game best played mute

without it sounding too unnatural

and they reflect the differences from character to character
there's some undub comparison clips on youtube that are really neat to listen to
ALSO A LOT OF THE BACHELORETTES THAT HAD you know how in japanese all the girls talk in a really high register
and sometimes when things get dubbed they try to do that in english and it sounds fucking weird
they went ahead and let everyone sound totally natural in english TL;DR I LOVE IT IT WAS A GREAT VOICE DIRECTION JOB
