I'm seeing the same sort of pessimism in predictions from other sources too.
I don't think the police procedural format is the best way to do a show about the future, but they've included enough other futuristic elements to capture and hold my interest.
And I like most of the characters, so its been a fun hour of escapism each week. Sure wish it could manage at least one more season.
Unfortunately by the same consequence we can see the end of sleepy hollow too... not having seen the following, is that show a serial? is it a show that an episode can be watched standalone?
I should have put that up as not having seen "The Following"
I'm guessing that other than the reality shows fox has always massacred the serials trying to hard to avoid "Twin Peaks" and "Lost" type shows
Sturtyt: Sleepy Hollow has already been renewed for next year, and has been a wild hit for Fox.
I'm not sure AH will almost certainly be cancelled. All that is stated in the article is true ... but what would Fox put in its place next season?
And while Monday's other programming is good: 1) Intelligence, Moms, & Hostages aren't/haven't don't so well, either & 2) this is the last season of HIMYM.
All the more reason to not see it past 2-3 seasons.. it seems that Fox enjoys rapid change... unless it's "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "Married... With Children," or "King of the Hill"
I love Fox's programming but quite often they don't want to carry through.
If/when the wind shifts for Sleepy Hollow, it will be a rapid drop. The show depends on breathless, WTF pacing and bucketloads of chemistry - the show will crash & burn rapidly, like a firecracker.
TV By the Numbers is predicting cancellation, too, although it was on the fence a month ago. I blame The Following.
IMO, Sleepy Hollow is the sort of show Fox loves because it's exciting, flashy and generates a lot of buzz. And while it hasn't clicked with me, I hope it continues to build its audience.
Almost Human is probably a more expensive show to produce (effects & cast) and hasn't captured as much audience or buzz. Fox isn't a patient network and they love to meddle, so they've invested in a show
that isn't immediately giving them the numbers they demand. The only way it's going to get renewal is if they cancel enough other shows that they need to keep it around to fill the void.
I read the reviews and commentary about AH over at the AVClub - and among those of us who let our geek & freak flags wave high - no one is really excited about the show.
People see the potential. There's a couple of episodes people have really liked. There's some great chemistry between the 3 top male actors (2 leads, one ancillary).
But it's not consistent, it's not thought-provoking, it's not as original as it thinks, nor as comfortable as it should be.
And I won't get started on the women.
I like the show, and yet I am rather frustrated by it. If it's cancelled, I'll miss the actors more than the actual story.
puts on a glider apparatus and jumps down from her huge soapbox
magzkam: Some good thoughts and I tend to agree - it could be so much more! But other than Agents of Shield, there isn't any other scifi in my viewing schedule.
Just makes me sad to see such an overload of reality shows and cop shows and inane sitcoms. Is it so much to ask for one good (new) scifi show, considering how many entertainment channels there are out there?
It is making the decision to drop our cable entertainment package a lot easier though. And I'm reading more books again, so maybe this could turn out to be a pretty good batch of lemonade after all.
caribouken: Oh, don't get me started on Agents of SHIELD ... so aggravating, although it's gotten better in 2014.
magzkam: On a happier note, we finally bought the first season of The IT Crowd and are enjoying it so far.
have you turned it off and on again?
caribouken: Have I ever mentioned my idea for a series of drabbles based on a hybrid of
The IT Crowd and
Star Trek? I call it "Enterprise IT".
(Yes, it is an idea I had, and I should work on it, if only for the lulz and the excuse to post to An Archive of Our Own)
magzkam: Don't remember you mentioning it, but it sounds like a great idea and I'd love to read it.
