For the uninformed, the joke here is that the citizens of the District of Columbia pay federal income taxes. But we have no representation in either branch of the Legislature.

We are subject to federal law and can be drafted into the armed services, but are unable to effect the process of law in any way.
and this is emphasized on your license plates.

Well, we have something called a SHADOW REPRESENTATIVE, which is about as effective a position as it sounds. The Shadow Rep is powerless and can only lobby, not vote.

Haha, yeah, DC citizens are insolent like that.
these are probably canada's greatest plates
they have a shockingly high rate of theft, I understand

We want statehood! But other states have to vote on that proposition. Seeing as DC is MOSTLY black, gay, and white/liberal, the conservatives aren't about to give us voting power in the House or Senate.

THOSE BEARS ARE ADORABLE
it is bizarre to me that DC is not a state
xixdegrees

Yeah, most Americans do not know this, or even worse, don't know that we don't get representation, or worst of all, don't see why we need it.

Haha, we just keep voting in Dem presidents. It's like 95% here every presidential election.
from a canadian perspective, it took me a while, growing up, to work out the difference between washington state and washington, DC
and then I assumed for years that DC was a state because obviously that's how it works
when I realised this wasn't true, it was just kind of like... well that's weird
people live there
weird stateless people

I'm sure! Haha, but you're canadian, so that's a legit excuse! There are people from the east coast who don't know this. Trust.
you have too many states
i think that complicates things

Well, I'm an ancient being, but when I was in middle school I was expected to memorize the states and capitols. I dunno if they still teach that!
we only had twelve province/territories and capitals to memorize growing up. Now there's thirteen.

BUT YES. For many reasons, it is true that we have too many states.
IT IS MUCH MORE REASONABLE

The history of the district is pretty interesting! Lots of weirdo facts. Haha, and jsut to make things worse, state-wise, some of the 50 states are actually COMMONWEALTHS, which have a different structure

for their state governments.

Ah, 'Murica.
