so I have this dogtag that Casey gave it to me, we were both talking about how it's "3 years off" because we were both born in 1980.

Looking at shapeways, I should be able to make a very similar 3d model, and put 1980 as the date, maybe even engrave our names on it... and make it out of stainless steel?

this is slightly bigger dimensions, so... I could make this for roughly $30?? I was going to look for something similar and get it engraved but am thinking that

anyone gotten metal-printed stuff from shapeways? I know about these and just have never seen anything in person. I'm half tempted to wait for a birthday and make

At first I was thinking try to make it as close to the original as possible, just with O1980 instead... and wondering how close a 3d printed version would come towards that goal

LoganBauer: i think for something like that you'd probably be happier with the final product if you went with a traditional method instead? the finish/surface on things 3d printed may not be what you really

In the picture there's like a slight patina effect? and some areas where they probably rub it with a , not sure how I'd get that on stainless steel(if at all), ect..

the only people i know how have gotten metal from shapeways have then done a fair bit of post work on them, polishing/sanding/improving finish
Logan

yeah Allegory that's what I'm getting at exactly, I'm wondering what the finish and surface will be like, especially the flat areas and if I like model in some surface bumps/scratches,ect...
Allegory says

note how bumpy the actual product is- that's not in the model
Logan

Ahh you're absolutely right. Yeah maybe if it'd be something I could polish or sand a bit on just the center of the faces for example...

if... if that dog nametag, if this : is all printed stainless steel then what's with the brown rustlike discoloration?
