So, apparently they're revising laws to make animals more than just property, which means that any malpractice suit just got exponentially more expensive.
And she was all, "Why are vets against this? Doctors get sued for malpractice, vets should too."
We already do and already pay malpractice insurance. The issue is that the increased cause of malpractice insurance will be passed along to increase the cost of all veterinary care.
So people will wait longer to bring in their animals or run diagnostics, causing more harm to animals.
Because every vet already thinks of them as children with hair and loves them. It's why we became vets.
And basically I explained this to her, and she just liked what I said and said nothing more.
It's becoming really sad seeing all of the articles saying, "Vets are greedy and see your animals as walking bags of money"
Yeah, that makes sense. Sounds more like she wasn't aware haha. Isn't malpractice a small part of why people health care is so expensive too?
Yeah... That isn't true at all. You do too much work to not love your field haha
Right. Between the insurance companies and malpractice insurance, that's why person health care is so fucked up.
And yeah. I almost mentioned the quarter of a million dollars in debt and the terrible fear we go through during surgery
Because truly, we don't EVER want to hurt an animal.
But yeah. It was more of a, "Don't comment on things you don't understand. Here's the big picture thing on why the AVMA is trying to get in the way of this"
The problem is... our lobbyists suck.
Right, right. I personally always liked my vets haha I just don't have the money to bring an animal in for routine care sigh.
Yeah. Or at least ask questions instead of just stating an opinion lol
Yeah. You can tell when you talk to a vet that they love animals.
That sucks though, I mean I guess the law has good intentions but we all know where that goes lol
But yeah. Especially since I am a vet student. So I'd hope I have some idea of why this is bad for vets/animals.
It does. The story they cited was on a cleaning lady letting a dog out and letting it get hit by a car and just leaving a note
That's gross negligence and COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than a malpractice case.
Oh wow... I mean that is horrible but that lady's job barely involves animal handling haha
Yeah exactly lol apples and oranges
I doubt the current law prevents that family from suing her for damages or something
Oh no, it was in a state that reformed the law already. So they could sue up to $100k
Which they did. They got $67k out of it and the cleaning company went out of business.
HOLY CRAP LMAO like dude, I get the dog is part of the family but now all those employees are screwed out of a job
Yep. I mean, I understand leaving a note is kind of some bullshit
I would load that dog up and rush her to the vet
But it's this that made the article go, "Vets and small business owners are worried about the law"
But oh well. I'm glad she listened to the broad picture reasoning. It's better than being argumentative and thinking that one article on the internet explains everything.
Yeah. I mean I would be a bit confused too if I read an article like that but I can see there is a bigger picture haha I am glad she did too
But still holy crap lol sorry I am just... That cleaning company story.
I KNOW. It's a weird thing. Also, I just can't imagine having someone come in my house with the chance of an animal running out?
