So I can start thinking about what it is I really want to do, which is get around to focusing on history, because as we know, history is my jam.
I may not be able to get into the fall classes, because it requires a bit of money for transcripts and app fees, etc.
But maybe by next spring semester.
But I've found a thing online to help me brush up on the stuff I either had a hard time with the first go around, or need a massive refresher because seriously, I've never actually needed to use calculus on a-
....huh, that's odd, most schools let you send out at least a few transcripts for free :|a
Not my high school, anyway.
yeah, highschools are stupid
But my highschool was some bs.
But even so, I'll need to save up for app fees, anyway.
I almost didn't get my hs diploma because they were claiming I owed them money
I could probably get into Mercer's online classes, which would be fairly okay for the core stuff.
I...Really don't want to have to waste gas to go to a campus for stuff I've already done?
Just so I can improve my GPA.
(I'll have to take it all over again, anyway, by GA standards because enough time has passed it counts as me starting completely over.)
But math is where I need to review, badly.
I don't want to get stuck doing remedial classes just because I'm a little rusty.
most core classes you can take online, the only thing you would have to go to campus for are tests, those need a proctor
I took a few the last time I was in college, but.
I just don't have the money atm to go every day.
and for math, most schools have a practice placement exam, so you can practice
Yeah, GA doesn't really do that.
They give you THE placement test and that's it.
At least in my experience.
let me see if I can find some practice math placement stuff for you then
But it'll be a tic before I even can think about applying and registering, but I've found some online classes that cover...P much everything.
worst comes to worst I can grab some material and drill you myself
I think once I actually sit down and make myself focus (always my biggest issue) and get back into the groove it'll come back.
I am just highly digruntled that I seem to have lost my graphing calculator.
B( I programmed tetris on that thing, ok.
And it was like $120 but I digress.
yeah, those things are expensive
Mine was covered in carebear stickers.
And I lost it in a move, I think.
But I won't have to worry about getting another one for a little while, so that's a good thing.
And I know I qualify for Pell, so that's a thing.
But this is a thing I think I need to do. Because as is, nothing is going remotely right.
So as long as I'm sitting here lamenting life, I might as well try to get a degree that's actually worth something as opposed to the fine arts one that does jack and squat.
I'll see if I can dig up some others
My math is what needs the brush up the worst.
I have a thing here, too, that covers just about every level from early math all the way up through different forms of calculus, along with a physics class.
I'ma probably start at pre-algebra and work my way back up, orz.
i approve so much of all going back to school for history plans <333 and i did my entire degree online, bb, so if i can be of any help just ask
that will be very helpful, the thing I linked looks like it only goes through high school algebra
I never thought I'd say that, but there you go.
sadly i cant help with math, in illinois we were only required to take one 100-level course and i luckily passed mine with a D xDDD
Well, I was in advanced level physics and calculus.
And I took a few side classes in college for giggles.
i think my brain is just. not geared for numbers and formulae, sadly
mutedtempest: and see that's your problem right there, looks like you've been tricked, that's not what math is
numbers are to math what grammar is to English
and formulas are to math what formats are to English
oh man i wish i'd known that sooner : / i was in remedial classes throughout high school and was in non-college level math courses for years before i was able to take one at the 100 level
while you need the former to make use of the latter the former is really really boring and not the meat of the subject
mutedtempest I understand this feel, bb. I've had
really excellent math teachers that know how to approach it in a way that makes sense to me, and
really awful ones who have no idea wtf they're doing.
My geometry and trig teacher was fucking abysmal. I didn't get most of it until I got into another class.
let me guess, the college level math was probably College Algebra, right?
yep, after two tries taking it and failing at the local community college
you probably would have done better in what's called "general math" or "contemporary math", it's a topics course that deals more with the logic side of math than the strait computations
because really, that's what math is, logic and reasoning, without that the rest is meaningless
and it's also pretty meaningless to try and use numbers and formulas you don't know and/or understand the logic of
Unfortunately, from what I remember of the not so great math classes I have, they just expect you to memorizes the formulas without an idea of why.
take for example the formula for the area of a rectangle, area = length * width, if all you know is that formula and not what it means it's hard to take that information and use it in situations that don't-
but with some understanding and a bit of reasoning and logic you can use that same formula to find the area of a parallelogram, a trapezoid, or a rectangle with a piece cut out of it
......./gets off soap box
no i totally agree <3 id have loved to know the logic behind it all, every math class i ever had was simply memorization of a formula and then use that to solve problems. i hated it
unfortunately there's a lot of pretty useless math teachers that are just a warm body, especially in primary and secondary levels, it's starting to get better though
assuming the states don't shoot themselves in the foot
I'm not holding my breath though
Ah, this place I found gives actual lessons.
This is good, I realize how rusty I am at everything.
I had a run of absolutely awful math teachers too. Really need to sit down and start teaching myself to brain it better but I have yet to locate the wherewithal.
Very much a go at your own pace deal.
Yeah, Khan Academy is brilliant for a lot of stuff.
It is new and exciting for me, which is good. So far it seems pretty awesome for that reacquainting thing I need to do.
Wolfram Alpha is pretty good if you want to check your arithmetic
Yeah, I've heard about it. Never had occasion to use it until now, tho.
it's pretty cool and very intuitive
