There are few moments in my life anymore where I feel like I got to be part of something kind of big, but tonight was one of those moments, with #HeroesOfTheDorm
I watched traditional sports fans freak out over a video game, by being upset and angry, but also intrigued and curious. I read as people watched and had no clue what was going on, but couldn't stop
watching. And it was amazing. And brilliant. And I am so glad that it happened in my lifetime. And I got to watch it.
I'm not sure I understand. This is notable because ESPN aired the finals on TV?
ah, cool. Then you have reached the prestigious level of Magic the Gathering circa 1996.
It feels really good to be validated by the world in that way, doesn't it?
I know you probably don't mean it,
shteevie, but you're kind of raining on her parade.
This was not even on my radar
And I think some DOTA2 tournaments have been broadcast too, except on stations not aired nationally. It's okay if it's not your thing. I found it exciting and awesome. It was super fun to be a part of even
as a spectator. Watching sports fans freak out was kind of it's own reward.
Also, kind of sad that 1996 is the last time there was gaming on ESPN, isn't it??
oh, sorry! I didn't mean to be a dark cloud. I meant it when I said that the validation was a great feeling. Hell, when magic was on all those years ago, the event was a week past and broadcast at 2AM.
having twitter and instagram there so the audience could be a part of it in real-time makes it a lot easier and a lot more involved of an interaction as a spectator.
With twitch and youtube and meerkat et al, it does seem weird that "old media" is at all necessary to bring those events to their fans.
The old debate of whether esports are "real sports" considering there's no physical exertion or something. If I recognize this, it's probably from TotalBiscuit (who is kind of a douchebag). I hope he at least
says something not terrible.
"generally male demographic" of course he said this he's such a sexist asshole. Ugh. I fucking hate TotalBiscuit. I KNEW he'd say something shitty somewhere in this video.
(Not to be taken as an attack on you
pastilla, so I hope you know this is not a reflection of YOU at all!)
no, I should have been more clear that I offered it in relation to your convo with Miss
zannah earlier!
He had good points until he said that. /flail It does fit though.
glad you brought out these ideas and thoughts. I listen to what you and
zannah and
Narilka notice in the gaming world as women . . .
and combined with these new ideas about what is "sport" . . . all of it does have a history-in-the-making feeling to it.
Yeah, it's kind of exciting! I mean, it helps to feel somewhat validated. I still sometimes feel like I need to hide what I do in my spare time (video games) because of judgment.
If you saw some of the reactions from traditional sports fans, you'd understand why!
As a traditional sports fan and a e-sports fan, I have no idea what that means
Game fan A bitching about game fan B's game. Game fan C saying "oh, neat"
There were some folks on twitter that really made my night though, like, in a good way. A guy who had no idea what he was watching, but was SO enthusiastic. It was fun.
I'll be game fan D saying "bitches, what? We hated Game fan F's shit before ESPN was a thing. But we still played it. And watched it."
Seriously though fuck Magic. Stupid game.
Wait, what are we talking about?
Seriously though, I think ESPN is eying Twitch warily. Which is awesome
