i think having sign-ups with specifications like "with character a" or "against character b" + a "DON'T CARE, RANDOMIZE ME" option should be fine? the simpler, the better imo.

or you can have a 'roster' at the top of the post and certain characters can volunteer as captains if you want and you'll edit as the sign-ups continue

if we end up with extra teams with lesser numbers, just contact those players privately like "so hey can i put you in a combined team" as like. worst case scenario.
