On Friday I had a person from plurk come by and visit and we got along, she liked the place, etc. It went well. Thank you guys for replurking <3

In the meantime my roommate and I, J, still need to figure out what's going on exactly so she can get out of here.

Basically I joined onto her lease in June with the knowledge that it was about to end at the end of July (the 31st, as in next Friday). She only told me she's leaving this past Tuesday.

We were going to go in on Friday (before plurk friend came) to see what we needed to do, but she was just...not here. And I was anxious about what was going down. So I left a note on her door and went over.

Leasing lady explains that the easiest thing would be to renew the lease, J puts in her 60 day notice and pays regular rent, and then I sign a form releasing her from the lease.
Bun

That way I can stay with whatever roommate I end up getting and J can leave.

Simple!

I start texting J to let her know since I assumed her not being there on time meant she forgot. She shows up half an hour late and is upset I went without her but.......seriously?
Bun

Anyway so we go back over. She gets upset at the leasing lady because she thought that she would go month to month and didn't seem to get that renewing is better. The month-to-month fee is $500.
Bun

So in total, because she's only putting in her 60 day notice now, she'd have to pay $1000 on top of regular rent.

So me and the leasing office lady are like wow so renewing is much easier and cheaper!

J says she needs to talk to her dad.
Bun

(Her dad pays 100% of her living expenses. He once went in and yelled at the leasing office lady because my dad's cosigner page hadn't shown up in the mail yet. They weren't concerned. He was. So he yelled.)

(The page showed up the next day.)

So eventually J seems to get why renewing would be better and the lady gives her a copy of the roommate release form and we leave. It's still tense, she's still very clearly upset although I feel relieved.

That night plurk friend comes over, we talk a bit.

J never came home.

That was yesterday. This morning, J texts me the following:

"Hey Kelsey, from what I can gather it is probably best you don't sign the lease unless you have a roommate to sign with you. I plan on doing a month to month fee for August."

I reply:

"I did sound like you'd have to pay for September too because of the two month notice thing though. Or are they going to make a deal so you don't have to? 500 a month is a lot of extra money."
Bun

J: "I am signing the 60 day notice and will have to pay August and September. I was going to have to do that anyway since I didn't give them the notice in June."
Bun

You will notice we have gone in a HUGE CIRCLE. Ultimately all that's changed is she wants to throw $1000 away so she doesn't have to sign a lease with me again??? I guess???
Bun

Literally that is the only gain she gets from this as far as I can see. Her credit isn't a part of it. She is going to have to pay for the two months either way. She can physically leave whenever she wants.
Bun
Yeah it sucks that she has to pay for September when she doesn't plan to be here but that is not my fault.
Bun

I have another person coming to see the apartment sometime next Friday and she wants to move sooner than plurk friend does but we'll see what happens there. I'm going to renew the lease regardless.
Bun

The only issue I can see here for ME is that maybe the rent she has to pay in addition to the month-to-month fee wouldn't have to go to the actual rent I'm paying so much as just to the company.
Bun

So that x amount wouldn't help me out at all? Which it should since she sprang this on me and I had almost no time to deal with it?
Bun
And here's the kicker: she and her dad basically stole money from me already.
Bun

When I first moved in, her dad was really insistent I pay a security deposit. I figured that was normal, whatever. Didn't really think it all the way through and gave her a check to give to her dad.

Only realized later that hahaha he's? Not my landlord?
Bun

He explained it as being because he had to pay a surety when J first got her lease (before I was there) so this was me paying my part of it. Sort of reasonable, but still kind of shady given
Bun

there's no contract.
Bun

So yeah I'm intending to ask for that money back before I sign the roommate release. My understanding is she can't be released from the lease until I sign it so she'll just have to give me that money.
Bun
I'm also going to hold off on signing it until I have my roommate situation squared away and know how J's payments play into this.
Bun

But yeah so. That's about it. Thanks for replurking and helping out, you guys!
