im a little disturbed by the largely tumblr mentality that I see where everyone says that parents should NEVER EVER look at kids' social media b/c it's their personal space

like. If we didn't look at my cousin's or my brother's social media, we wouldn't have known that they were suicidal

i feel like there's a huge difference between watching your kid's media and constantly punishing/judging and looking at social media to make sure they're alright

kids aren't perfect and sometimes they make mistakes that they're embarrassed to admit or don't think parents will understand and I think not monitoring social media leaves kids pretty vulnerable sometimes

idk i've just seen a lot of posts saying "parents destroy trust/are trash by checking kid's facebook, twitter, and tumblr" and its really bothered me

yeah I mean maybe it's because I was never really super rebellious but I don't care if my parents see what I'm up to for the most part? Like maybe the slash stuff is a bit embarrassing but mom reads smutty

books so she can't judge. I just think too much of tumblr has the ideal that parents should be more buddies and pals than actual parents teaching their kids
