I guess people have been parking along curbs without them for so long that the idea of these only being a thing now seems really weird XD

I think it was more of a thing back in the day. A lot of vintage cars have them and when my dad mentioned them he was talking about cars in the 60's/70's.

dual purpose: keep you from curbing your tires, and let you know you've gotten close enough to the curb to avoid a parking ticket for being too far from the curb. Yes, there were parking enforcement officers

that would measure it.

Idk I've seen people park so far away from the curb that they have blurred the distinction between "parking" and "having stopped in the middle of traffic and pissed off".

Maybe those officers are a good thing XD
