Starting from the beginning: the record player was bait. When Ashley set the needle down, it dropped the hammer onto the board Shadow found, which had been propped up on the fulcrum.
The board, much like a seesaw, shot up at the other end, firing a bottle (or some other projectile) into the pipe. The bottle then rolled through the pipe, down the board and into the forklift.
The projectile activated the forklift, which then pulled the lever via the pulley and rope system and activated the claw. The claw was holding the makeshift gun, which fired the gears at Asheley.
(It's also possible someone else activated the trap, under the guise of wanting to play some music.)
okay, but what about the ball? and how would a rope pull a switch? i remember that the other end of the rope wasn't attached to anything
The ball was the projectile, forgot about that.
or was the switch more like a "pressable" switch or not?
The rope probably pulled off of the lever when it activated it.
It was a lever, not a button.
The forklift probably pulled the rope further than it needed to just to switch the lever, so it came off and fell loose.

But he still doesn't know what the trigger was, so someone's going to have to draw his attention to the record player.
If only Papyrus was able to be apped
