1941年10月27日，兩營加拿大部隊 ─ 溫尼伯榴彈兵營與加拿大皇家來福槍營，乘坐巨型運輸艦赴港增援。11月16日，援軍到達香港，令駐軍增至六營。這批部隊為數2,500人，唯大部分皆是新兵，沒有作戰經驗，甚至不知道香港的位置。加上他們的裝備未及抵港，大大削弱其戰鬥力。種種惡劣條件下，他們作戰勇武非常，超過五百名加拿大守軍陣亡，當中283位埋葬在西灣國殤紀念墳場，三分之一無名無姓。另外228位並無墳墓...

...，名字刻於墳場紀念碑上。 1937年初，英國參謀長們在局勢檢討中，認為香港必須能夠支撐90日，等待本土艦隊來援，作出「香港應視為一個重要(important)但卻並非主要(Vital)的前哨據點，其防禦時間應盡可能延長」、並用為鼓勵中國抗日的判斷。1940年8月法國淪陷後，新任的參謀首長們在檢討中鑑於日本步步進迫，認為無法守住香港，曾經建議撤軍，但這決定並未加執行...
