Looking for a fabric for an Org 13 coat

Most people use some kind of vinyl or pleather, but 1) their coats are not as shiny as vinyl, 2) from the hang and flow, they're not made from leather, and 3) that would be excruciatingly hot where I am

So I'm looking for alternatives.

My go to is just walking through the fabric store, feeling up bolts >.>

the only thing I've actually worked with that has the sort of fall on those coats would be a satin but that won't have the finish you want. maybe the back side :|b

I think there's satin that has a less shiny finish

crepe satin, I think it's called?

it might not fold nicely if you want the hood to be able to be up or down, though. and from wearing floor-length satin, it WILL be really warm
Jaetopus

but it'll give you nice shapes in the coat itself, especially if you line it
Jaetopus

alternatively, you could find a fabric that will give you the look you want and line it with something stiffer to get the right shape

(but all that adds heat. I cosplay at a winter con, so take anything I say with a grain of salt since my brain tends to gloss over making stuff lighter since I don't like freezing)

yeah I have the opposite problem

hmmmm... I'm googling for ideas. have you considered the really thin sort of upholstery vinyl? I've never looked for black, but I have a really nice low shine brown that I've used for a couple projects
Jaetopus

it's almost as thin as regular fabric so I imagine it would flow not too badly, if not quite like a regular fabric.

I've also found that most vinyl fabrics take leather dye really well, so you'd probably be able to reduce any shine even further by going over it with a matte coat

yeah, I'm considering that, since it's probably the only thing that will work. Wonder if they have anything in a suedelike finish...

check the upholstery section of your store. since it's black, you miiiiiiiight have to order online to avoid getting a pattern (lots of ones I see have snakeskin or something) but I bet you can find it

some places will even mail you a sample so you can see it frist

yeah unfortunately if our local Walmart doesn't have it I will have to figure out how to get to a fabric store out of town. There's really no other alternatives sob

oof, yeah, Walmart doesn't carry a lot of specialty stuff, good luck
