That post that's been circulating about Adam Driver's body dysphoria
had a comment that really seemed to be trying to shit on people for saying we shouldn't not stand up for someone with dysphoria because Oscar Isaac and John Boyega had it worse???
How does that in any way negate an actor having really poor body image
To the point where watching himself causes actual distress
Like I said I can't exactly post this on Tumblr because I'd probably be eaten alive but
I just sincerely don't understand
I know there was so much shit Isaac and Boyega got just for being men of color in a Star Wars film but
"Yes that's true and actual Hollywood bullshittery and people are racist assholes at Oscar & John but also Adam has an actual self-esteem disorder"
It just reads like "they should be protected because they're POC!!!! but yeah make fun of Adam Driver's nose that's still okay"
I just....to me John & Oscar shouldn't be mocked for being poc just like Adam shouldn't be mocked for his appearance either, because of mental health reasons
It comes off as really ableist, almost?
idk I am just so confused and kind of like "......"
..........Man, I'm with you :/
I hate the way Tumblr goes "I have a pet issue so no ohters exist"
I've actually seen some of those circles say that anyone white and male CAN'T actually have depression or mental illness
And that if they're depressed it's their own fault
Maybe I'm missing something? Again, the way my brain works with ASD, but...
(Hell I've had someone I thought had been a friend who fel into that mindset attack me that I couldn't possibly understand minorities b/c I was white/cis....)
(......after I'd been going through the story of getting death threats for being bi/in a same-sex relationship)
You're not missing something, they just kinda tune out anything that isn't race and it gets really toxic
(this person did completely turn on me to the point of shit on WG because I was uncomfortable with "DIE CIS SCUM" and "DIE WHITEY" and "white/cis people can't have mental illness/be unhappy")
and she did go as far as dismissing that even being LGBT or having an abuse background was still invalid if you were white.
Sooo I'm not.....really... from what she did whe nshe went on the "No I'm being perfectly rational", they take th sociological large-scale definition of "oppression and discrimination" that's used for
discussion of laws and cultural dynamics where things are definied as a "dominant" group that holds power etc.
And then applying it to individual dynamics to mean that "because that's discrimination, minorities can't be hateful/abusive b/c abuse is a power dynamic"
Except htat at that scale, you're dealing with psychology
And on that scale, prejudice is a pervasive set of ideas about a group of people defined by a stereotype regardless of context
Tribe dynamics as opposed to Kingdom dynamics, right
And discrimination is acting on those prejudices, positively (preferental treatment) or negatively (abuse)
So baiscally it's ...armchair sociology used to justify "I am hurt by social dynamics so I hav ea right to take it out on other people" and revenge mentality?
"Beause I was hurt by white people I have a right to want to see white poeple suffer/be abusive towards them regardless of context"
and invalidate their identities, apparently
And then using the sociological/poli-sci definiton rather than the psychological one to justify it as "I can't be prejudiced/discriminatory/abusive because you can only be abusive if you're in a position of
I's really bloody toxic and completely ignores intersectionality or the existence of other issues besides the pet one
Like the thing where if you're white then mental health issues like self-esteem issues, body-image issues, etc. are invalidated by being "white" and to be made fun of.
Instead of going "Race is an issue and so is toxic body-image problems/depression/mental illness stigma"
It's not really race dynamics at that point, tbh :/
More like individual bitterness turning into negative coping mechanisms justifying abusive behavior
regardless every single lead in the new Star Wars is someone I admire and get really protective over. Every. Single. One.
Yeah, and I do love that tey DID do so much that wasn't th eclassic hollywood habits
Carrie Fisher's older (and people have been HORRIBLE about the fact taht she -LOOKS OLD-) and has been doing mental health advocacy
(her dog's a service dog for bipolar)
And everyone is p much like "that's nice George" at Lucas's toxic behavior
"now sit down and drink your beer"
Didn't he kinda sign away rights?
I noticed that he was positive about the movie
And got a positive reception
And more positive than the prequel trilogy
And then decided to bitch about it being diverse and better than his trainwreck that was the prequels
And then suddenly he hates it and is comparing signing away the rights to slavery
"That's nice sit down and drink your beer and let it go" is about the best anyone can do with that
But yeah UGH people have been such shit to Carrie Fisher
I love how she and the others banded togther on it
carrie fisher looks fabulous thank you
She's been a fucking Queen about it though UGH
(and she did call out a problem - the thing where women aren't allowed to look older etc.)
I love reading her twitter feed
Oh did you hear about the thing with the pink R2 unit you see in a few of the scenes with the X-wing fighter groups?
That pink R2 wasn't made by the Lucasfilm group/etc.
There was a little girl who was terminally ill
And someone who makes custom R2 unit things made one for her as a gift before she died, her family kept it
They started going to 501st things and going out to fundraisers and things for that illness an for terminally ill children with that R2 unit
And someone working on the movie found out and asked if they could have it in the movie
(tbh I think it passing out of Lucas's hands was the best thing that could've happened, he's gotten old and bitter and hung up on a lot of shit and stopped accepting input from others)
you could see it in the prequels. a lot of it was just his ego.
Yeah; I didn't hate them but a lot of the things that could've been better probably chalked up to him not taking outside input like he had wiht the original trilogy
it's kind of like. you were hoping they would fail, dude
you were hoping that "oh man it's just not the same without lucas" would be the response
but it wasn't and you're pissed
And now he's looking for anything to pick apart and just...needs....to stop
this is like the fourth post I've seen invalidating it and I'm mad
I'm actually posting a retort
I don't care anymore I am so fucking pissed
Man I agree wit hyou 100%there
b/c that really is "mental illness isn't a ~real~ disability" bullshit
or equally as bad the "other people have it worse" argument
which oh hey a common way to invalidate someone's issues
Oppression Olympics arguments, the only things that are valid are Pet Issue, nothing else is actually worth caring about
this kind of shit is why I don't bother with anything "social justice" on Tumblr
there are so many toxic, idiotic people there who I feel like are either 4chan plants trying to discredit the social justice movement
or have gotten sucked in by their rhetoric because it allows them to bully others without repercussions, which gives them a feeling of power and validation that they've never had anywhere else in their lives
and they're not self-aware enough to realize that getting into Oppression Olympics makes them part of the patriarchy's agenda, because divide-and-conquer is its number one tactic
Or that they make it easier to discredit and feed into making people with a bias more biased by reinforcement
And neutral people more likely to turn hostile
/hi known psych patterns with biases
/"I have a right to be abusive b/c I hate this general category of people"= opposite of fighting a negative prejudice
....welp I've gotten at least one reply that seems to be a mix of lack of reading comprehension/"oh no angry language=malicious intent!!!"
The Mos Eisley of social issues.
I dunno. mos eisley had some good music.
I'm not even sure what that person is trying to argue
no one can know all the issues someone is facing and how dare you judge them for not knowing something and saying something jerky
how about don't be a jerk to anyone
Yeah that's about the thing that drives me nuts, the "I have a right to act abusively toward others/just be nasty don't judge me because I'm a minority and entitled to it"
