I think that whatever happened to them, it was so horrible that they lost all faith in humanity
And it seems that Asriel hints that Chara climbed Mt. Ebott to either run away or commit suicide
I think that other people might have learned about their ability to save/load and tried to exploit them or harm them
That and the only person Chara actively, deliberately harmed was themselves, since I don't honestly think they or Asriel knew that buttercups were poisonous
until after they made the mistake with Asgore
But Chara was so angry at the people who hurt them that they would rather throw away everything they had in order to get revenge
so it had to be pretty damn serious to make a child that young into such a nihilist
And the worst part is they manipulated Asriel into it, and Asriel genuinely cared about them
I do kinda headcanon that Frisk is Chara's reincarnation
but only awakens in the genocide route for...obvious reasons
And the more you go through genocide route, the more drunk on power they get, until they completely destroy the Frisk personality and possess them entirely
and as the events with Asriel proved, the worst thing you can possibly do is give a bitter, angry, and nihilistic kid whose sense of empathy probably hadn't even developed properly yet power like that
You're gonna have a bad time
So yeah Chara did some absolutely terrible things but I don't think they were irredeemable
It's just a shame they died before that could even happen
by roping Asriel into killing them no less
I kinda have to feel for the kid. They obviously needed a lot of help, and...didn't get it.
but I think through Frisk (at least in the neutral/pacifist routes) they were able to make amends
I know I shouldn't be bumping such an old plurk up but there's really no reason to make a new one
But I'm glad I'm not the only one who headcanons Chara as AFAB aaaaaaaa--
my headcanons keep bouncing around like crazy so who knows how long that'll last
